COUTURE

Since graduating from the Royal School of Needlework, I’ve freelanced for Alexander McQueen, and had lots of fun working on costumes for film and television.

Selected Couture Projects

Transcending Cells: The Unseen: Tactile Biology

When studying at the Royal School of Needlework, my work focused on translating the unseen—abstract shapes found in human and plant cells under a microscope—into tactile, textured surfaces using hand embroidery techniques like Crewelwork, Goldwork, and Canvaswork. I was inspired by natural forms, material manipulation, and the energy of organic structures, creating thought-provoking garments that blurred the lines between art, fashion, and biology.

E.Tautz Menswear Collection
Autumn/Winter 2020

I worked on a special collaboration between the Royal School of Needlework and menswear label E. Tautz, that focused on promoting sustainability and the art of mending. I created hand-embroidered patches from upcycled materials, which were incorporated into E. Tautz’s collection, showcased at London Fashion Week. Led by visiting lecturer and renowned textile artist Celia Pym, we explored traditional darning techniques, bringing new life to garments destined for landfill.

Creative Director Patrick Grant beautifully summed up the collection’s ethos: “If you love your clothes, wear them until they wear out, and when they do, fix them.” This project highlighted the importance of longevity in fashion, pairing hand embroidery with a message of sustainability. The experience was a powerful reminder that traditional skills like embroidery remain both timeless and necessary in today’s fashion landscape.

Autumn/Winter 2021

Another collaboration between the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) and E. Tautz. The project involved creating hand-embroidered portraits of 19th-century textile pioneers Robert Owen and Thomas Bazley, along with their historic mills, using reclaimed fabrics and detailed Appliqué techniques. Revealed at London Fashion Week, the collection was inspired by Creative Director Patrick Grant’s trip to the Isle of Skye, reflecting themes of human impact on the planet, sustainability, and longevity. It highlighted the importance of valuing craftsmanship and creating pieces that last—a message that deeply resonates with my practice as an embroidery artist. Working on this collection was an incredible experience, blending historical storytelling with contemporary fashion.

Out of the Blue

I was deeply honoured to take part in Out of the Blue, an art installation led by renowned artist Susan Aldworth and commissioned by the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University, with support from the Wellcome Trust. The project explored the lived experiences of people with epilepsy, translating their testimonies into hand-embroidered words on antique garments.

I contributed by embroidering one of these garments, stitching personal stories of epilepsy into hidden layers of fabric. This slow, contemplative process made me reflect on the intimacy of the condition and the unseen impact it has on those who live with it.

Displayed at the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle, the installation featured 106 antique garments, moving gently in response to electrical brain activity during an epileptic seizure—beautifully merging science, art, and human experience. It was a privilege to be part of this project, which brought hidden stories to light through craft.
